The poverty, exploitation, and bigotry she experienced in her early years aroused deep emotions that stayed with her throughout her life and which became part of her stories. She was raised by her grandparents, Rose and John McMullen. She was the illegitimate daughter of Kate Fawcett, an alcoholic, whom she thought was her sister.
